Equanimity - What is it? How do you get it?

During the past year we've had a great response to our magazine Equanimity.  Some people wonder WHAT IS EQUANIMITY?
And I guess you could say it's a journey that we all seem to be on and connected to... in some way or another.

If you go to the web and search for Equanimity you'll find wikipedia telling us it's a "mental calmness and evenness of temper."  Wordnetweb affilitated with princeton.edu calls Equanimity "composure:  steadiness of mind under stress" ... and we can't talk about Equanimity unless we mention a talk given by Gil Fronsdal in 2004, Gil is a teacher for the Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City, California.  He's an ordained Soto Zen priest, received his undergraduate degree from UC Davis and a PHD in Religious Studies from Stanford University.  Gil talks about Buddhist practices and no matter what your religious belief or background is - we think you'll agree that Gil has some interesting points about Equanimity.  Gil talks about about the Pali words used by the Buddha... where equanimity translates into two separate Pali words one is upekkha meaning to look over to observe and perhaps gain the peace that observation can give.  The other Pali word for equanimity is tatramajjhattata, "a compound made of simple Pali words. Tatra, meaning there, sometimes refers to all these things.  Majjha means middle, and tata means to stand or to pose. Put together, the word becomes to stand in the middle of all this. As a form of equanimity, being in the middle refers to balance, to remaining centered in the middle of whatever is happening. This balance comes from inner strength or stability. The strong presence of inner calm, well-being, confidence, vitality, or integrity can keep us upright, like a ballast keeps a ship upright in strong winds. As inner strength develops, equanimity follows."

We all struggle for inner strength, peace... balance and there are so many ways to achieve these goals.  We at Equanimity are branching out to give you the best possible ways to reach your goals.  In the upcoming edition you will meet someone that is like you perhaps and we hope their journey will inspire you and give you the inner strength to obtain your completeness.  Maybe our upcoming productions and television show will speak to your heart providing you the means to stand in the middle of all this.  Whatever equanimity means to you... we hope we can be a beacon to your ship and to keep you upright in strong winds.

Peace + Balance = Equanimity
