As Equanimity looks ahead to 2012 we had the opportunity to see how others’ New Year is already shaping up. Journalist Soledad O’Brien told Equanimity publisher Lumbie Mlambo that she is excited to be back! “Back” as in her new morning job at CNN. The former CNN journalist will rejoin the news operation in 2012 when she will co-host a "conversational ensemble program" from 7a.m. to 9 a.m. ET. O’Brien was the keynote speaker at the DFW Association of Black Journalists Gala earlier this month when Equanimity had the opportunity to speak to the journalist about her past and her hopes for the future. We will also be looking at education and empowerment and of course the topic we’ve been promoting lately … going the distance. How do you go the distance and maintain? "a compound made of simple Pali words. Tatra, meaning there, sometimes
refers to all these things. Majjha means middle, and tata means to
stand or to pose. Put together, the word becomes to stand in the
middle of all this. As a form of equanimity, being in the middle
refers to balance, to remaining centered in the middle of whatever is
happening. This balance comes from inner strength or stability. The
strong presence of inner calm, well-being, confidence, vitality, or
integrity can keep us upright, like a ballast keeps a ship upright in
strong winds. As inner strength develops, equanimity follows."

We all struggle for inner strength, peace... balance and there are so many ways to achieve these goals. We at Equanimity are branching out to give you the best possible ways to reach your goals. In the upcoming edition you will meet someone that is like you perhaps and we hope their journey will inspire you and give you the inner strength to obtain your completeness. Maybe our upcoming productions and television show will speak to your heart providing you the means to stand in the middle of all this. Whatever equanimity means to you... we hope we can be a beacon to your ship and to keep you upright in strong winds.

Peace + Balance = Equanimity

Equanimity hit the radar of Mr.Magazine's staff. They base their criteria on:

1. How much publicity did the magazine generate at launch?
2. How relevant was the magazine to intended market?
3. Was the magazine so bizarre that it had to be included?

We at Equanimity don't consider our magazine bizarre and the gang at Mr. Magazine apparently agrees awarding Equanimity for "A good attempt in achieving a new breed of magazines and a lot of credit for being the leader of the pack."

They go on to talk about Equanimity's diversity and our attempt to better reflect our society with diverse topics covered in one magazine. To read more about the top new magazine launches in 2010 go to:

Lumbie Mlambo had a dream to share people's stories and their journey's in hopes that it would create a positive influence and touch those that read the pages of Equanimity Magazine. In our winter edition you will find ways to find a balance to be enlightened and empowered on your journey.

During this season - we want to wish that peace, joy and happiness accompany you and sees you through the new year!

Peace + Balance = Equanimity

We are thinking about relaxation here at Equanimity and as I think about the next 10 Ways to Stay Balanced column, I think about relaxation and how important it is for all of us. Being in the right state of mind keeps us balanced, and feeling relaxed helps get us there.

The Mayo Clinic offers these tips on getting to that place where calm enters our being and a refreshing moment takes over our inner self.

Autogenic relaxation – Autogenic means coming from within.

In this technique you repeat words or imagine a peaceful place and focus on controlled breathing and awareness of your body.

Progressive muscle relaxation – this helps focus on muscle relaxation by first tensing your muscles for 5 seconds then releasing for 30 and repeating.

Visualization – taking a visual journey through mental images by closing your eyes, sitting in a quiet spot and imagining a peaceful, calming place.

Ahhh… See I’m already feeling more relaxed just by writing this! Try one of the techniques and let us know if you feel more relaxed or balanced.

Once you get there you’ll want to find more and more ways to be in that state of mind… might we suggest the incredible music of Maurice Kirya ? Mr. Kirya - a Uganda born musician, and singer shares his dreams with us. He calls his music “mwooyo” which means “soul” in his native language. Read about Kirya in the current fall issue of Equanimity AND you can meet him at Barnes & Noble’s Booksellers at 7700 W. Northwest Hwy in Dallas on October 16 from 3 – 5pm. Kirya will be signing copies of Equanimity and performing.

We are also heading to the NHS Wellness Fair at the Natural Health Shop in Richardson, TX this weekend. There should be lots of great natural products to help us take care of our bodies.

So… we’ve conquered relaxation, our soul, our bodies… what else you may ask? Well, an up and coming event helping to promote breast cancer awareness with a portion of the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Organization is... The Celebration of Life “I BLEED PINK GALA AFFAIR ” at the Arlington Museum of Art in Arlington, Texas on October 16 from 7 to 11pm … it’s a PillowTalk Event and you can click on the link to get more information.

Staying relaxed, keeping informed, learning to tone our bodies and souls – it’s all part of staying balanced and keeping our inner peace.

Remember…

Peace + Balance = Equanimity
